SkinCan looks to provide free checks for individuals that meet the following requirements:
- Don't have medical insurance and
- Don't have any other means of covering the cost of their treatment.
- Over the age of 50.
Do you meet these requirements?
New Zealand currently has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. Some skin cancers can be fatal and early detection and treatment is very important to offer the best cure rate.
The SkinCan free skin cancer check day is a volunteer-based initiative aiming to raise awareness about skin cancer. A group of local dermatologists and GP’s who have a special interest in Skin Cancer are available to offer their expertise free of charge in order to provide an initial skin examination for anybody who is concerned about certain lesions on their skin.
The skin check day is purely about providing skin examinations free of charge to adults 50+ years. Please note that it is not a standard dermatology consultation and therefore any other skin issues will not be addressed. Also, the dermatologists will not be able to offer management of any concerning lesions that are identified. It is therefore essential that all patients attending for an examination are registered with a General Practitioner.
After the skin check, a letter with relevant findings from the skin examination will be sent to your GP. If any concerning lesions are identified you will need to make an appointment with your GP, who will be able to arrange the appropriate treatment. Please note that it is your own responsibility to make the appointment with your GP. Although you will need to make the appointment yourself, we will contact you by phone after six weeks of the Skin Check Day to remind you to make the appointment if you have not done so already.
When you arrive on the day, a volunteer will give you a health questionnaire to complete and take you into an area where the skin examination will take place. You will be asked to get undressed to your undergarments behind a curtain. Your skin will be examined from head to toe, and some lesions may be examined using a magnified, polarized light.
The medical records from the day will be stored by SKINCANNZ. A copy will be handed to yourself and another copy sent to your GP.Disclaimer
